Our 2020 Calendar features a set of full-colour images based on the artwork of Desmond Ross. The Wavertree scenes depicted (see above) are:
(Left-hand column) Piggymuck Square, Bishopgate Street, the Mystery, & Picton Road pubs.
(Centre column) Washday in Wavertree, the Monks' Well, Salisbury Terrace, & the Hairdressers in Picton Road.
(Right-hand column) Downhill Sidings Wavertree, Smithdown Road, Cambridge Street Mission & Holy Trinity Church.

Desmond Ross was born in Garston in 1931, and left school at the age of 14. After serving as an apprenticeship as a poster- and sign-writer, he set up his own business in this field. Some of his paintings feature posters that he remembers creating in the 1950s! It was in 1956 that he married and moved to Wavertree, and it is a desire to record the social history of our area that has been his main inspiration.
